Anteater – An Introduction

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

Ant eaters are mammals known for eating ants and termites. Ant eaters have a long head with a long, tubular mouth and long tongue, but no teeth. It lives in forests and swampy areas and on open plains and is mainly diurnal in areas where there are few people, and is nocturnal in densely populated areas. It is extensively distributed in the tropical parts of South and Central America, frequenting low swampy savannas, along the banks of rivers, and the depths of the humid forests, but is nowhere abundant. The anteater rapidly flicks its long tongue in and out of the small mouth opening, scooping up termites or other insects on its sticky surface.
