Caribou - An Introduction
Saturday, July 22nd, 2006Caribou is a North American deer of the same species as the reindeer of Eurasia. Although the caribou looks like a deer, they are different from other members of their family in many ways. They are not too shy (unless in common hunting area), they are capable of sleeping in water, and are herd animals that are always on the move. Caribou range in height from 87 to 140 cm (34 to 55 in) at the shoulder and weigh from 60 to 318 kg (130 to 701 lb). Two principal groups exist: the Barren Ground, or Arctic, caribou and the woodland caribou.
