Crane - An Introduction
Tuesday, July 25th, 2006Crane is a common name for any of about 15 members of a family of birds, found from above the Arctic Circle to the southern tip of South Africa, in all continents except South America and Antarctica. Cranes are superficially similar to herons, which also have long legs and long necks, but they are not closely related. They are opportunistic feeders that may change their diet according to the season. They eat suitably sized prey such as small rodents, fish and amphibians, but will eat grain and berries during late summer and autumn. Cranes fly with their necks fully extended, whereas herons, once they have attained their full flight speed, pull their heads back so that the neck is bent in an S-curve.
