Elk - An Introduction
Tuesday, July 25th, 2006Elk refers to a number of species of larger deers. The Elk is distinguished from its cousin deers by its antlers. The male moose’s antlers arise as cylindrical beams projecting on each side at right angles to the middle line of the skull, which after a short distance divide in a fork-like manner. The lower prong of this fork may be either simple, or divided into two or three tines, with some flattening. Elk once numbered in the millions and occupied habitats spanning most of North America. Unfortunately, shrinking habitat and over hunting reduced populations to a few persistent herds in the mountainous West. Had the elk not been remarkably adaptable, it might now be extinct.
