Muskox – An Introduction

Saturday, September 9th, 2006

Muskox is an Arctic mammal known for its thick fur and strong odor. Musk oxen are usually around 2.5 m (8.2 ft) long and 1.4 m (4.6) high at the shoulder. Adults usually weigh at least 200 kg (440 lb) and can exceed 400 kg (880 lb). The Muskox has two kinds of fur. The outer fur is coarse and stiff. The under fur is soft and able to keep the Muskox very warm. The fur of the Muskox is 3-4 inches thick. Even the young calves are able to survive by themselves when the temperatures get down to -30ºF.
